When do I need to consider dentures?

Charity calls on local authorities to improve oral health services

Most people are reluctant to consider dentures for themselves, due to some negative and outdated ideas associated with false teeth.

However, there needs be nothing negative about getting dentures.  Dentures can allow you to improve your oral health, the appearance and shape of your face, the ease with which you eat and speak, and most importantly your confidence and quality of life.

Even if you have taken excellent care of your teeth, there still might be a possibility that you need to start considering dentures.  Visiting your dentist will help you to identify these signs early on.

Unhealthy gums that are red, swollen and constantly bleeding after brushing display all the classic signs of gingivitis and gum inflammation.  If left untreated, this can be extremely painful and can even eventually lead to tooth loss.

These types of unhealthy gums can also lead to gaps opening up between your teeth, or a shifting in the position of certain teeth.  This creates space for your teeth to move, and this in turn can also lead to tooth loss.  Taking care of your gums with a high standard of oral hygiene is essential to avoiding losing your teeth.

The biggest indication that you may need dentures is if you are already missing a couple of teeth.  The pressure exerted on remaining teeth is sometimes too great for them to handle alone, which could in time lead to those teeth falling out too.

Some people think all that matters is that they still have their front teeth intact.  However, while these front teeth can bite and pull on food they are not very good at chewing – this is the job of the molars at the sides and back.  The fact of the matter is, with fewer teeth doing work your teeth will wear out faster.  This cascading effect will weaken remaining teeth may well necessitate dentures in the long term.

If you have trouble eating certain kind of food due to weak or missing teeth, this is also something that should be rectified as soon as possible.  Visit your dentist for advice on how to help strengthen your teeth, or if you need to begin thinking about dentures.

It is worthwhile considering dentures before it is too late and you have lost all of your natural teeth.  Whether you choose partial or full dentures, they will help to return your useful and natural-looking smile, giving you the confidence to eat, talk and laugh just as you want to.
