Today, seven members of the Dental Laboratories Association (DLA) team took the plunge by throwing bucketfuls of freezing water on themselves as part of the Ice Bucket Challenge in support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
The DLA has donated £250 to the Nottingham branch of the MNDA as well as completing the challenge.
Standing in the office car park, the DLA team took turns to call out their nominations before dousing themselves in ice-filled water. Seven local businesses in Beeston were nominated, who will have to complete the challenge or donate to the cause.
Motor neurone disease (MND) is actually a group of related diseases that affect motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord. This causes difficulties in speech, walking and general movement. The disease is progressive, but being well informed and planning for the future allows patients to achieve the best possible quality of life.
The Ice Bucket Challenge has become a viral internet hit in recent months, with celebrities, billionaires and presidents all taking part. So far the challenge has raised an estimated £3 million in the UK and $88.5 million in America, where the craze started.
“It’s brilliant that a little-known cause is now getting such great publicity,” said Richard Daniels, Chief Executive of the DLA. “This is a wonderful charity to support and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. We’re particularly grateful to the Nottingham branch of the MNDA for all their hard work and dedication.”
To donate to the MNDA, text ICED55 £5 (or whatever amount you want) to 70070, call 01604 611860 referencing the Ice Bucket Challenge, or visit the Just Giving page.
