Four signs that your dentures may need replacing

Replacing your dentures is something that generally needs to be done every 5 to 10 years.  Unlike actual teeth, dentures cannot last a lifetime.

Natural changes to your mouth and bone will mean that in time your dentures will need to be adjusted or replaced, even if no wearing or damage is visible.  Here are four signs to watch out for that may mean your dentures need replacing.

Bone loss

Bone loss is a natural occurrence if you have missing teeth.  Signals that you may be experiencing bone loss include movement or slipping of dentures when you speak or eat, or clicking, whistling or smacking while you talk or eat.

Also watch out for wrinkling or the lips and around the mouth.  A sunken look to the mouth or changes in the appearance of your mouth may indicate bone loss.

A visit to your dentist will help assess the potential of bone loss.  Your dentist will then be able to decide if you require your dentures to be relined or replaced.

Difficulty eating

One of the reasons why dentures are so wonderful is being able to experience the joy of eating again.  If there are changes in the alignment between upper and lower dentures, this can lead to difficulty eating.

Well-fitting dentures will allow you to eat naturally without any discomfort or shifting.  If you begin to experience difficulty when eating, your dentist can check the alignment and make adjustments for newer dentures so that the difficulty will not continue.  Older dentures will probably have to be replaced.

Dry mouth

You may be taking medication that can cause dry mouth.  There are also certain health conditions which can lead to dry mouth.  Moisture is important when wearing dentures, so dry mouth can lead to denture issues.

Moisture is required to keep your dentures secure and comfortable.  Speak to your dentist if you are experiencing dry mouth, and they may be able to assist you in keeping a more comfortable fit.

Pain

If you experience pain of any kind you should contact your dentist as soon as possible so they can identify the issue and allow you to feel comfortable with your dentures again.

Always visit the dentist regularly, even if you do wear dentures.  This will allow any issues to be spotted before they become serious and your dentist will be able to check on the condition of your dentures.
