Are dentures right for you?
Dentures are a common solution to missing teeth, and if this is a problem you struggle with, you may find that you have asked yourself the question ‘are dentures right for me?’.
A missing tooth or teeth can be the cause of many challenges, not only physically in terms of appearance and difficulties with eating, speech etc., but also emotionally if missing teeth are affecting quality of life.
At this point, you may be considering having dentures fitted. High quality dentures can be made to resemble natural teeth, improving appearance and restoring confidence.
While almost anyone with missing teeth can find themselves suitable for having dentures fitted, there are several types to choose from. Worth noting also are the limitations – smokers, people who grind their teeth, and those who have other oral concerns may find that they are not suitable for dentures.
Partial dentures can be fitted to replace missing teeth in groups on the upper or lower jaw, which attach to remaining teeth. Prosthetic teeth replace the missing teeth, while the top of the denture is gum-coloured so that it blends easily with the rest of the mouth. Full dentures are similar in appearance, but provide a complete replacement for teeth on the upper jaw, lower jaw, or both.
Initially, dentures can feel strange and uncomfortable, and will require follow-up dentist appointments, but you will adjust to them in time. At first, eating can be a problem, as well as discomfort, but this subsides, and the function and appearance of your mouth will be improved.
If dentures really are unsuitable, another alternative is dental implants, which replace single or multiple teeth by screwing the false tooth into the jawbone. The screw acts like the root of a tooth, and dentists advise that dental implants can last as long as they are being cared for.
