Mouth Cancer Action Month preparations get underway
November will play host to this year’s Mouth Cancer Action Month campaign, and the leader of the campaign, the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF), says they have already started work for the month.
This year’s focus will be on encouraging dental patients to keep up to date with routine check-ups, and to be ‘mouth aware’. Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the BDHF, is asking dentists and other dental professionals to be proactive in promoting awareness of oral cancer and getting involved with the month’s activities to try and reduce Britain’s mouth cancer rates.
An increasingly prevalent form of cancer, the survival rates for oral cancer are not improving at the same rate as other cancers, which is why the month will focus on trying to spot the signs early, so that it can be prevented when possible. Across the nation, dental practices will be offering free oral cancer screening as part of the campaign, as well as hosting other events to raise awareness of mouth cancer, and to support mouth cancer charities.
Last year, more than 1,500 people and practices took part in Mouth Cancer Action Month, and the BDHF is hoping for an equal, if not greater, level of success this year. Once again, the campaign will be supported by Denplan.
