Dentist to make mercy mission to Morocco
A dentist from Bradford is travelling to Morocco at the end of May to provide dental treatment to children who do not have access to it. Carl Taylor, 37, principal dentist at Taylored Dental Care which has practices in Keighley,Idle, Wibsey and Ilkley, will travel with a group of fellow dentists to carry out the work.
The dentists are part of the Dental Mavericks charity, and will be paying for the trip to Morocco themselves. Dental Mavericks is a charity that was founded in 2010 with the aim to provide dental care for children in Morocco, and since its founding has treated over 30,000 children. For the duration of their trip, they will carry out as much treatment as possible all free of charge.
Dr Taylor, of Hawksworth, said that “there is a great need out there, and a lot of people and children live a long way away from dentists, as they cannot go into the towns and cities.”
“It’s heartbreaking seeing children with swelled up faces that are so easy to treat but they are in so much pain,” he continued.
Dr Taylor will be travelling out on May 22 before returning on May 25, and he said he will be aiming to see about 20 children per day while out there.
The group will be travelling to the small town of Asni, which is situated in the foothills of the High Atlas mountains, 33 miles south of the city of Marrakech. While in Asni, the doctors will be working in cooperation with the Eve Branson Foundation, which aims to improve the lives of young people in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains.
Cally Gedge, co-founder of Dental Mavericks, said the work the dentists will be carrying out can be lifesaving as “Some of the children there have developed septicaemia which usually starts as a toothache and is easily treated, but when it is left untreated it can be fatal.” The team “want to stop these easily preventable deaths.”
“We feel these visits are important to help us give back to the community, and these children have nothing,” Gedge stated.
