Mouth cancer warning signs

Mouth Cancer Awareness month in November is held to spread public knowledge of and bring attention to oral cancer, otherwise known as mouth cancer. Almost 12,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with it every year – and only between 19 and 59 per cent survive.

That may seem like a scary number, but in actual fact, between 91 and 93 per cent of cases are preventable. So why so many deaths?

According to the NHS, this largely preventable cancer easily goes unnoticed and many symptoms are very subtle, resulting in the high death toll. Here are ten symptoms worth watching out for now that mouth cancer awareness month has finished.

However, early detection is key as 91 to 93 per cent of all oral cancer cases are preventable. According to the NHS, below are 10 subtle symptoms that you need to look out for.

1. Mouth ulcers

A massive indication of mouth cancer, especially if they do not heal in a few weeks.

2. Lumps inside the mouth

Lumps inside the mouth that cannot be explained and refuse to go away are big warning signs.

3. Lumps in or on the neck

Lumps that show up around your neck’s lymph glands should ring warning bells, especially if they are unexplained and do not clear up.

4. Difficulty swallowing

A less obvious sign, but it is always worth going to the doctor if you experience pain whilst swallowing.

5. Small changes in your voice or speech pattern

If someone close to you notices you speaking or sounding a little differently, it could be an indication of mouth cancer.

6. Unexplained weight loss

A common side effect of many serious health conditions that can also signal diabetes and other cancers.

7. Bleeding inside your mouth

Especially if your mouth also feels numb. Should either of these occur, contact your GP immediately.

8. Loose teeth

If your teeth are wobbly and loose with no explanation, it could be time for an urgent check-up. If a tooth falls out and the socket does not heal, this is also a big warning sign.

9. Difficulty moving your jaw

If you are struggling to eat or move your jaw, then consider a visit to the dentist or GP.

10. Sore throat

Whilst a common occurrence, if it is in conjunction with other symptoms, it could signal something more serious.
