Shocking new decay figures show we must cut sugar consumption

New calls have arisen from dentists pleading with the public to cut sugar consumption, following the release of shocking new figures published last month. A new insight into the situation has shown that twice the amount of kids under the age of ten were admitted to hospital for tooth decay than for a broken arm last year.

The Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons’ new figures indicate that more than 34,000 dental procedures were completed in surgeries across Britain between March of 2016 and 2017. Better oral hygiene, decreased sugar consumption and habitual tooth-cleaning routines could have allegedly stopped more than 90 per cent of the cases, according to Prof Michael Escudier, a senior member of the FDS.

Henrik Overgaard-Nielsen, Chair of general dental practice at the British Dental Association, blasted the report as “shocking”. He has now taken up the call against the government, blaming them for their failure to “tackle a preventable disease.” The association is backing demands for further legislature to provide more information to parents and children. They want to raise awareness of kids’ rights to free NHS care, and to promote this message using advertising companies and other major manufacturers.

A new campaign, launched by The British Society of Paediatric Dentistry, is now encouraging parents to take their children to their local dentist before their first birthday; the drive has now been backed by the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
