Woman prosecuted for illegal tooth whitening

The General Dental Council (GDC) has successfully prosecuted a woman from Coventry for carrying out tooth whitening illegally.

Kerrie Jackson, who worked at Ruby Tuesdays salon, pleaded guilty to offering the treatment without being on GDC’s list of registered dental professionals on the 3rd of February 2016.

An investigation was started by the GDC after it received a third complaint against Ms Jackson, and decided to prosecute as she had already ignored two previous warnings sent to her by the GDC.

The case was heard at Coventry Magistrates’ Court on the 4th of May 2016, where Ms Jackson was sentenced to a two-year conditional discharge, and ordered to pay GDC’s costs of £1000 as well as a £15 victim surcharge.

Francesca Keen, Head of Illegal Practice at the GDC, said in regards to the case that “Another successful prosecution shows how seriously both the GDC and the magistrates’ courts take the illegal practice of dentistry. We hope that Ms Jackson’s sentence will act as a warning to individuals who continue to carry out illegal tooth whitening.”

Keen continued to note that “If you have tooth whitening by an individual not on the register, it could result in significant, long-term damage to your teeth. We strongly advise anyone considering dental treatment to check the individual is on the GDC register.”
