Protecting your teeth from a green tea stain
Green tea has become a popular health trend in recent years and many people swear by the stuff. But despite all its health benefits, green tea does have one unfortunate drawback – like many other types of tea, it can stain teeth.
Considering its popularity, it is surprising how few people are aware that green tea can stain your teeth.
“Green tea today is one of the most consumed beverages amongst young people and adults, especially women, as it contains essential nutrients which are very low in calories and high in antioxidants. A few cups of green tea is healthy, but when you turn something into a habit and increase the amount of intake there will be some drawbacks,” says Dr Karishma Jaradi. “It can change the natural white colour of your teeth to a more yellow and stained appearance.”
But how does staining occur? Green tea contains plant compounds known as tannins, which is rich in pigmentation and thus can lead to stains. Equally important, the acidic nature of staining drinks, such as tea and coffee, increases the porosity of tooth enamel. This is turn makes it easier for pigmented molecules to adhere to the enamel and cause staining over time.
Caffeine, too, has a corrosive effect on tooth enamel. Other food and drinks which are high in acidic content are orange juice, tomatoes and many other types of fruit. Cola, wine, and sauces like tomato, soy and curry sauce also tend to stain teeth.
The best way to prevent staining is to practice good oral hygiene. The three important steps to remember are brushing, flossing and rinsing after meals. Whitening strips or toothpaste can also be used to remove some stains.
