Common causes of denture pain

As a denture wearer you may sometimes feel denture pain, such as tender, swollen gums and a tired, achy jaw.  You might also suffer from painful gum sores.  However, pain is not necessary and can be fixed.

There are several factors that can contribute to pain and discomfort with dentures, and all of them should be seen to as quickly as possible.  Here are some of the most common:

Poor fit – if your dentures are old and loose they might rub against your gums.  This constant friction can lead to sore spots and swelling.  If you have a poorly fitting denture base it can cause uneven pressure to your gums, resulting in a painful pinching of the gum tissue.  This, in turn, can cause tenderness and swelling.  If you are suffering any of these problems, your dentist can help to address the fit of your dentures.  They will help you decide if you require dentures or simply modifications.

Pressure points – aggressive biting or chewing can cause painful pressure points, through gum tissue getting trapped between the base of your dentures and your bone.  Avoid trying to take too big of a bite with your front teeth as this can put excess pressure on your gum ridges.  Over time this will cause your gums to become tender and uncomfortable.

Resorption – this is a process whereby your gums and bones shrink, which can affect the perfect fit of your dentures.  As gums and bone get smaller, the shape of your mouth will be altered, which will in turn cause the original fit of your dentures to become uncomfortable.  The worse the fit, the more your dentures will begin to move against your gums, causing friction and sore spots.

Lack of bone production – bone production begins to decrease when you lose the roots of your teeth.  Eventually it will stop completely.  Shrinkage of the dental ridge can also be caused by gum disease.  Considering all of these factors, it is important to have regular denture adjustments to maintain a comfortable fit.

If you are experiencing denture pain of any kind, speak to your dentist.  Your dentures should not cause you any pain at all.
